Painting Plastic Window Sashes

All the sashes on the windows were already black and because i liked the palette when we changed the body and trim colors we kept the black window trim.

By leaving these areas bare you allow both rails horizontal parts of the sash frame and both stiles vertical parts of the sash frame to expel moisture. Finish painting the outer sash start by painting the glazing bars 6 and 7. Painting the sash and the window jamb or sill the same color will make the sash look too large and throw off the proportions of the window. The sashes may be painted shut the top sash in particular.

Step 4 paint the window casing and. Step 2 with your brush paint the upper sash beginning with the crossbar. Peel the masking liquid off the glass. The paint can be applied right to the cured masking liquid.

Slide the inner sash down and slide the outer sash up use the unpainted cross member to pull the outer sash up to expose the top half of the outer sash above the inner sash. Furthermore the casing supports an opening in the wall and the paint job should show that structure.

Use a window scraper fitted with a sharp single edge razor blade to scrape any excess paint off the glass. Don t forget that the exterior paint could also cause the sashes to stick. Then the upper cross bar 8 and finish with the two side rails 9 and 10 brushing the paint to blend it with the previous painted areas. With the old paint removed and the wood cleaned up and repainted prep the sash before the old glass can be put back in.

These areas are not seen or readily exposed to the elements so there is no cosmetic reason to paint them but there is a more practical reason not to paint them.
